The Covidien ClosureFast System™ is an effective solution for treating varicose veins.  It is a minimally invasive radiofrequency (RF) ablation procedure that uses a catheter to collapse and close enlarged varicose veins. The catheter used heats the vein in 7 cm segments with 20-second treatment cycles, which results in vein shrinkage. The patient is given local anesthesia to eliminate discomfort during the procedure. Ultrasound imaging is used to locate and map affected veins, after which a narrow catheter is inserted. Radiofrequency energy is delivered through the catheter in order to seal the vein.

This outpatient procedure allows patients to return home after it is completed. Patients are encouraged to walk around the next few days in order to promote healthy blood flow and prescribed compression stockings.

Results are seen within a matter of weeks and any symptoms associated with varicose veins disappear within a few days from the procedure.
